This Privacy Policy explains how UnifyMail (the "Software") handles your information. UnifyMail is a free, open-source, desktop email client that runs entirely on your computer. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about our practices.
By using UnifyMail, you agree to the terms of this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Software.
Your email stays on your machine. UnifyMail's sync engine runs locally on your computer and connects directly to your email provider using standard protocols (IMAP, SMTP, CalDAV, CardDAV). We do not operate any cloud relay, proxy, or intermediary service that processes your email.
This means:
UnifyMail ID (Optional)
You may optionally create a UnifyMail ID to enable certain features. If you choose to do so, we collect only the information necessary to maintain your account (e.g., email address). A UnifyMail ID is not required to use the core email functionality.
Email Credentials
When you add an email account, your credentials (username, password, or OAuth tokens) are stored locally in your operating system's secure credential storage (Keychain on macOS, Credential Manager on Windows, Secret Service on Linux). We never receive or store your email credentials on any server.
Email Content
Your emails, contacts, calendar events, and attachments are stored locally on your device in a SQLite database managed by the sync engine. This data is never transmitted to us. It exists only on your computer and your email provider's servers.
Anonymous Analytics (Optional)
UnifyMail may collect anonymous, aggregated usage analytics to help improve the Software (e.g., which features are most used, application crash reports). This data does not include any personal information, email content, or account credentials. You can opt out of analytics in the application settings.
Crash Reports (Optional)
If the Software crashes, you may be prompted to send an anonymous crash report. These reports contain technical information about the error (stack traces, OS version, application version) but never include email content or personal information. Sending crash reports is voluntary.
The limited information we may collect is used solely to:
We do not use your information for advertising, profiling, or any purpose unrelated to improving UnifyMail.
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties.
We may share anonymous, aggregated data (e.g., total number of users, most popular features) that cannot be used to identify any individual. We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect the safety of our users.
UnifyMail connects to your email provider(s) using standard protocols. When you use UnifyMail with a third-party email service (such as Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, or others), your email data is subject to that provider's own privacy policy and terms of service.
We recommend reviewing the privacy policies of your email providers to understand how they handle your data. UnifyMail does not control and is not responsible for the privacy practices of third-party email providers.
If you connect a Google account to UnifyMail, the Software's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Specifically:
Your email data is stored locally on your device in an application data directory. Security measures include:
While we take reasonable measures to protect your information, no method of electronic storage is 100% secure. You are responsible for maintaining the security of your device.
You have the right to:
GDPR Compliance: If you are located in the European Economic Area, you have additional rights under the General Data Protection Regulation, including the right to access, rectification, erasure, data portability, and the right to object to processing. Since UnifyMail processes your email data locally and we do not store your personal data on our servers, most of these rights are inherently satisfied by the Software's architecture. For any GDPR-related inquiries, please contact us at the address below.
UnifyMail is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided personal information through the Software, please contact us and we will take steps to remove such information.
Since UnifyMail processes data locally on your device, your email data does not cross international boundaries through our services. However, your email provider may store or process your data in different jurisdictions. Please refer to your email provider's privacy policy for information about international data transfers.
If you optionally submit analytics or crash reports, this data may be processed in the United States or other jurisdictions where our infrastructure providers operate.
UnifyMail respects Do Not Track (DNT) browser signals. As a desktop application that does not track users across websites, DNT is inherently respected. If you have opted out of analytics within the application, no usage data is transmitted.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically.
Material changes will be communicated through our GitHub repository, release notes, or within the Software itself.
